Amanda McIntyre is an Assistant Professor at Western University in the School of Nursing, and a Registered Nurse in the emergency department at London Health Sciences Centre. As a clinician-scientist, her long-term goal is to improve heath care policy and practice via rigorous health systems and health service delivery research. Amanda has published extensively in the field of neurorehabilitation, currently holds three grants, and is the recipient of several local and national nursing awards.

Dr. Charlene Chu is an Assistant Professor at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Scientist at KITE Toronto Rehab at the University Health Network. She is also cross-appointment (status only) with the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work’s Institute for Life Course & Aging at the University of Toronto.  As a Registered Nurse with 12 years of experience working with older adults across the health spectrum, Dr. Chu’s primary area of research is in designing interventions that support the mobility and daily function of older adults in post-acute care settings (e.g. long-term care, rehabilitation, community).

Secretary - Elizabeth Strauss

Elizabeth is an autistic and disabled nurse scholar and educator and a Postdoctoral Fellow with ReVision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice at the University of Guelph. Their clinical background has primarily focused on disability and complex care needs across settings. Elizabeth joined NRIG as they would like to expand their research networks across Ontario and contribute to work advancing nursing research.

Communication Officer - Newsletter - Leo Macawile

Leo is a new graduate nurse and currently practises as a critical care nurse. Their research interests include un/healthy work environment in nursing as well as ethical recruitment and transition of Internationally Educated Nurses, particularly of those from the Philippines. Leo joined NRIG because they desire a more diverse, inclusive and equitable representation of research in nursing and would like to highlight the scholarly work of people/groups who have been historically marginalized.

Eugenia is a Registered Nurse at the University Health Network practising in Medicine. She is also currently a Masters of Science student in the School of Nursing at McMaster University. Her interests include immigrant health and access to health care services. In this new role, Eugenia hopes to combine her interests in communications, design, and nursing research.

Michelle Greenway

Membership Officer - Michelle Greenway

As a Registered Nurse, Michelle's clinical background includes emergency medicine and cardiology. She is currently practising as a patient educator in cardiac rehab while pursuing her Masters of Science and PhD education at McMaster University. Her current research explores the transition experiences of nursing professors at Ontario colleges while her future research will focus on health coaching related to outpatient diabetes remission programs. As Membership Officer, Michelle is looking forward to networking with fellow nurse researchers and to connect with the latest nursing research in Ontario.

Policy and Political Action Officer - Simon Donato-Woodger

Simon graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 2020. Since then, they have worked on a variety of General Medicine, COVID-19 Relief, and Critical Care units. Simon currently work on the Intensive Care Unit at Scarborough General Hospital and assists Dr. Charlene Chu at the University of Toronto as a research assistant on the topics of gerontology and Artificial Intelligence. Simon also works in Community Health as a Registered Nurse for the Parkdale Queen West Supervised Consumption Site.

 

Samantha Horvath

Samantha's clinical expertise includes emergency nursing and paediatrics. Her research involves advanced practice nursing, emergency departments, health system innovation, and specialty certification. Samantha joined NRIG to promote the development and uptake of research with nurses across their career continuum. 

Nicole Serre

Nicole Harkins is a Registered Nurse at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre and a faculty member in the Health, Wellness and Sciences Department at Georgian College. Nicole completed her Master of Nursing degree from Toronto Metropolitan University and her thesis focused on nurses’ experiences with patient safety incidents in long-term care homes. Nicole hopes to continue to expand on her research findings to enhance gerontological care in nursing homes. Within this role, Nicole hopes to draw in the interest of nursing students, staff nurses, and future researchers to NRIG.

Members at Large - Social Media – Jessica Ackerman

As a Registered Nurse, Jessica's clinical background is in Emergency Medicine. She also teaches in the Emergency program at Humber College and in the undergraduate nursing program at the University of Toronto. Jessica is also currently pursuing a Masters of Science in the School of Nursing at McMaster University. Her thesis work focuses on digital health specifically virtual care and remote automated monitoring; digital health literacy and digital equity. In this role, Jessica is looking forward to leverage her passion for nursing research, digital design, and communications.

Amanda is a second year student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at at Georgian College. Her research interests include nursing education, chronic health management, indigenous health, health equity, and  the social determinants of health. In this role, Amanda is looking forward to expanding her research networks with current professionals in the field and to help increase the engagement of undergraduate nursing students in nursing research.

Khalila is a third year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research interests focus on women’s health, managing chronic conditions, qualitative research, and the social determinants of health. In this role, Khalila is eager to connect and form relationships with other nursing professionals with similar interests for research and improving health outcomes.

Her research interests focus on exploring the lived experience of those with chronic diseases, social determinants of health, and death education for nursing students. Alison is also a member of Nipissing University’s Nursing Society and is on the Lakers Rowing team. As a student representative, she is excited to connect with professionals with similar passions for nursing research and health advocacy.
